Permanent Latvian residence holders of Russian origin will be stripped of access to free healthcare and the opportunity to open bank accounts as well as risk being expelled from the country if they don’t learn the language in 6 months, the country’s Internal Affairs Ministry said.
However, if they revert to a temporary permit, they only will be given an extension to 5 years to pass the country’s language test, Minister Kuchinskis said, claiming that “there will be no hunting” of Russian speakers.
