9 Dead, Social Media Banned, As Protesters Clash With Police In Senegal

The Senegalese government announced a ban on social media on Friday “to prevent the incitement of further violence” after confirming clashes between police and supporters of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko resulted in the deaths of nine individuals.[RT]

On Thursday, Sonko was found guilty of corrupting youth but acquitted of charges related to rape and death threats against a woman working at a massage parlor. The court sentenced him to a two-year prison term.

Sonko came in third in Senegal's 2019 presidential election and is popular with the country's youth. His supporters maintain his legal troubles are part of a government effort to derail his candidacy in the 2024 presidential election.
