The Police in Kiboga district are still investigating the circumstances under which a mother allegedly poisoned her two children, killing one and leaving the other hospitalised.[IT]

The incident took place on May 4, 2023, at Nasuna cell in Kiboga Town Council.

According to Racheal Kawala, the Wamala region Police spokesperson, a mother of two, Rahuma Nakunda, is alleged to have poisoned herself and her two children following a misunderstanding with her husband and mother-in-law.

Kawala said the two children, Hanifah Nassiwa, 6, a pupil of Good Morals Nursery School and Sadick Lubulwa, 4, were rushed together with their mother to Kiboga Hospital for treatment.

Unfortunately, Nassiwa passed away on May 5, 2023, at about 6:00 am.

She explained that the incident started when Nankunda developed misunderstandings with her husband, only identified as Musisi after he suspected her of being in love with another man who had impregnated her.

Nassiwa said Musisi took the matter to his mother, Harriet Nantiba, and later reported to the Police’s family and children protection unit in Kiboga.

She explained that Nankunda was summoned for a meeting but was shocked when she met the mother of her new boyfriend also in attendance, yet she had allegedly lied about her real husband.

According to Police investigations, fearing further embarrassment, Nankunda skipped the meeting under the guise of going to a nearby shop to buy drinks for her children who she said were hungry but never returned.

It later emerged that she allegedly bought some sodas and poison, which she allegedly mixed in the drinks, locked herself and the children inside her house, and served them.

Kawala said after waiting in vain for Nankunda to return, Musisi sent his young brother to check on her from home, but he later informed them that she had locked herself inside the house.

Musisi tipped local council leaders who broke down the house door only to find the three in critical condition.

The Police picked some exhibits from the scene and were still waiting for Nankunda to recover before she can be charged.

A post-mortem examination was carried out on Nassiwa’s body before it was handed over to relatives for burial as investigations continue.

The case has been recorded as that of murder by poisoning.
