Flooded Auckland Emergency Declared

New Zealand has declared a state of emergency in Auckland on Tuesday after the North Island’s major city and region was inundated by “really heavy” rainfall that is expected to continue falling until midnight.

Schools and train services have been closed with downpours expected to continue into Wednesday, with 277 weather-related calls to the Fire & Emergency services reported in a seven-hour period.

Auckland has already received 90% of its average annual rainfall this year, with three people dying in January’s record rainfall and flooding.
